I already knew Ivey would bet exactly 35K as well on the river before he did it. Thats just what I would do with a set. If I was against Ivey I probably would have folded my aces here too.
Ivey OOP leading out 3 times in a row just screams Set 80% of the time bluff 20% of the time, but if he was bluffing a set here I would think he would bet a little bigger.

@StolenWork – Get out of my brain. XD

“I’m gonna check/call/check/call/fold”
Also, that’s not at all what happened here: Cunningham had position on Ivey. He didn’t check his hand at all. Ivey bet into him, and he -correctly- just called.
If Ivey were to shut down on the turn or river, it is very possible that Cunningham would have bet. But Ivey fires all 3 barrels, representing a very strong hand.

“Whenever I get aces, I’m gonna check/call/check/call/fold if I don’t make a set.”
You don’t get it. There are so many factors in this hand that you are not even considering other than “OMG he has AA!”. Even when you are faced with the obvious, that Cunningham clearly made the right decisions and lost the minimum!
Consider for a moment that Cunningham is 7th on the all time tournament winnings list… But yeah, he’s a fish.

Okay, my bad, guys. Cunningham played this like a pro. Whenever I get aces, I’m gonna check/call/check/call/fold if I don’t make a set.

easy fold. AA sucks on that board.
And what are you talking about raising the river to make ivey consider a bigger set??????
For what reason?
Ivey is never folding a set you idiot.
Raising the river is like turning your AA into a bluff…
about 2 years ago
@dinkers425
You are an idiot!
Do you think ivey would fold a set?,,,,
on that board??
Cunningham is a very solid player so Ivey knows he has Big cards or a big pair…
After Allen’s call on the turn he’s now 99% sure its a big pair.
Thats why he is playing the hand very straight forward betting big every street..To get paid of by a big pair!!
And Allen knows this!! and he knows that Ivey knows this.
The big valuebet on the river tells Allen that ivey is prob. beating a big pair.

“reraise on the river would be an AWESOME play”
No, that would be the *worst* play, ever!
He obviously think he is beat. Therefore he puts Ivey on at least 2 pair, but with an uncoordinated flop, a set is much more likely. You of course know that Ivey has bottom set, and therefore assumes that Cunningham knows this as well, and that he can represent a higher set. Of course he doesn’t, but even if he did, it would still be completely idiotic to try an bluff an opponent off a set.

“he was simply fishing the entire time”
Retarded.
Cunningham played the hand exactly like he should: He is trying to keep the pot small.
Why would he raise? There are no draws to protect against, and Ivey would fold most of the hands that he could beat.
” A reraise on the flop might [have] fold equity.”
WTF? You think there are poker players who make money bluffing their opponents off sets on dry boards?

Sick fold
No, you can’t just “assume” anything. But by smooth-calling, you’re gaining NO information about a player. Narrowing your opponents ranges of hands is CRUCIAL in NLH. A reraise would have AT LEAST given Cunningham some information about Ivey’s hand. All he did was fish for another A, and when he missed it, he folded. His play was weak.
@dinkers425 Alright, I get it. If you have pocket aces, you should bet into them, if they call or re-raise, you can just assume they have a set and fold immediately. If Allen re-raises on the river, Phil should just assume that Allen has a higher set and can fold. Verdict: Anyone who bets must have a set. I’m not saying Cunningham played the hand perfectly or even well. But it was a good laydown in the end. Like I said, it’s pretty easy to analyze, knowing the hole cards.
I think a pot-sized reraise on the river would be an AWESOME play, making Ivey consider whether or not Cunningham had flopped a larger set. It’d be a hard fold by Ivey, but it would at least be a more thought-provoking play than fishing for Aces.
How are you arguing in favor of Cunningham’s play. do you not agree he was simply fishing the entire time, checking and calling? Why was AA good enough for a call on the turn, but not on the river? It’s because he was FISHING. The commentators are watching this video, thinking that Ivey is simply value betting, but Ivey isn’t even sure whether or not he’s beat. Cunningham could have flopped the middle button set for all he knows. A reraise on the flop might even have some fold equity.
